Women in Tiling: Why More Women Are Joining Hands-On Trade Classes

Something exciting is happening in the world of DIY and trade skills. More women are stepping into workshops, picking up tools, learning hands-on techniques, and discovering just how empowering it feels to build practical skills for themselves.

We have seen this first-hand through the growing popularity of our women’s only tiling classes. The response has been amazing. What started as a way to create a comfortable and encouraging learning environment has become one of the most exciting parts of what we do.

For many women, the idea of entering a trade space can feel daunting at first. There is often a long-standing assumption that trades are mainly for men, or that practical skills are something you need to “already be good at” before you begin. That simply is not true. Everyone starts somewhere, and learning to tile is no different. With the right teaching, support, and space to practise, beginners can achieve far more than they think.

Our women’s classes are about much more than tiles and tools. They are about confidence, independence, and breaking the idea that hands-on trades are out of reach. Some people join because they want to renovate their own home. Some want to stop depending on others for every DIY job. Some are curious about starting a new chapter and exploring a trade in a serious way. Whatever the reason, the result is often the same: they leave feeling proud, capable, and inspired.

There is something powerful about learning a skill with a group of people who are cheering each other on. You can feel the energy in the room when someone makes their first tile cut correctly, gets a layout spot on, or steps back and sees a neat, professional finish beginning to take shape. Those moments matter. They remind people that practical trades are learnable, and that confidence is built by doing.

The interest we have had recently has been incredibly encouraging. Being featured in the Reading Chronicle has helped more people discover what we offer, and our founder’s upcoming appearance on BBC Radio Berkshire is another exciting moment to spread the message even further. It is clear that people are looking for opportunities to learn real-world skills, and it is especially inspiring to see so many women embracing that opportunity.

Tiling is a brilliant trade to start with because it is hands-on, creative, technical, and useful all at once. It gives people the chance to transform spaces while learning a process that can be used again and again. More importantly, it helps people trust themselves.

We believe everyone should feel welcome in skilled trades. The growing demand for women’s only tiling classes shows just how ready people are to learn, get involved, and feel empowered through practical education. It is genuinely exciting to be part of that journey.
